Trousers: we all need them. But while suits, blazers and shirts are generally more noticeable, dramatic parts of a men’s wardrobe, trousers can seem a bit more functional, limited and frankly unexciting. Admittedly you can only do so much with your go-to jeans and a pair of khaki chinos. Pants are probably the clothing item most purchased as an afterthought or with little pre-purchase planning.
But choosing the wrong pants or worse buying ill-fitting ones can ruin a look you’ve so carefully crafted with other quality clothing items. So here’s a few essential but exciting trouser ideas which will work with other items in your closet.
THE GRAY WOOL TROUSERS
A gentleman requires more than just jeans and chinos in his range, trouser-wise. The answer: the grey wool trousers — for when you want to dress up, but don't quite require a suit.
Perhaps even more than the navy blazer, the gray pant should be a staple of the well-dressed gentleman. Almost every blazer will fit with gray pants — and if it doesn’t then you should seriously reconsider the blazer.
Wool as a fabric breaths well, so it can work well both in winter against the chill, but also in summer. Pair the grey trouser with a plain T-shirt, navy blazer and brogues, or dress them up with an oxford shirt and loafers.
They’re the serious looking pants you’ll turn to for many occasions. Don’t go for anything too dark as you’ll run into pairing problems; a light or mid gray goes with anything.
While we all have our go-to jeans for casualwear, every man should have an alternative — pair of solid-colored pants, which are ideal for every casual occasion. It doesn’t matter if you’re off to a summer barbecue, a casual outdoor wedding, or a lunch meeting with a few work colleagues, khakis allow you to look put-together without being too formal in a suit — or too casual in a pair of jeans.
Go for plain simple chinos in a versatile color like khaki or blue and make sure you purchase them without pleats in the front. These come and go in style with these kind of pants — and there’s a reason — they just don’t look good. Buy simple, classic, slim chinos and you’ll never look out of fashion.
The chino was first developed in the 1800s for British and French military uniforms and is known for its ease in movement and simple functionality. Chinos are made from a heavy duty fabric – cotton twill and this makes them very durable. Treat them well and they’ll last — just like jeans.
For a wintry layered look, pair a pair of dark solid blue or brown chinos with a casual wool blazer and white oxford shirt and complement the look with a slim-fit sweater. In summer you can’t go wrong with tan chinos and a short-sleeved cotton button-down shirt in navy or light blue.
SLIM BLACK PANTS
Invest in a pair of slim black pants with a bit of stretch. They can be chinos or other cotton, wool, polyester suit-type pants. It’s up to you. A good simple pair of black pants are pretty much appropriate for any situation. They can appear casual enough that you can wear them in place of denim but clean and slick enough to be worn with a blazer, shirt, and tie.
Pinstripes are a bold way to add some pattern to your everyday trouser life. The humble pinstripe offers a great heritage look and adds a sense of class to even the most casual ensemble.
