Clothes do not make the man. The man makes himself and yet the clothing he chooses to wear can reveal much about who he is.
A choice of color. The addition of accessories to add flair to a simple suit. The selection of sizing and cut. Is your clothing pressed and ironed? You’d be hard pushed to argue that clothing does not define a part of your identity. Bands and actors use fashion style to appeal to and connect with their audience. Keith Richards dress style has run a gamut of skinny jeans, grandpa-shirts, skinny suits, cowboy boots, waistcoats and sometimes headbands. It all says “I’m a rock ‘n roll rebel.” Echo and the Bunnymen had the market in eighties trench-coat cool, appealing to somewhat serious and deep young men. The Beatles mid-sixties dress virtually created hippie psychedelic fashion. Clothing can thus create a sense of belonging to a social group yet also help you stand out as an individual within that group.
Indeed you want to stand out — but in a good way. Heard the saying “stand out like a sore thumb”? That’s not how you want to stand out. Subtlety is the key. You don’t want to look exactly like everyone else. You want to look a shade better. You want to look like someone a bit more together, a bit more knowledgeable, a bit better at coordinating color, someone who’s just put a notch more thought into what he wants to say about himself than the others around him.
Welcome to the concept of style. Although there are generally accepted principles of men’s classic dress, certain clothes, certain shades and styles will suit you better than others. It all about working out what clothing best fits your body type best, mastering the basics, then experimenting a little. Learn the rudimentary sensible rules, then see how you can break them and still look good. Unsure how that works? Just ask Keith Richards.
